The  primary value I got from the week was exactly what my objective was: to gain familiarity with the "outline" of the Spanish language, giving myself a sense of the blueprint of the language so that I can "fill in the blanks" from then forward, piece by piece. Also to gain familiarity with basic pronunciation, grammar, and common idioms. I now know, only after 6 days at Anders, that I could go to any Spanish-speaking culture, with a small Spanish dictionary, and be able to function by myself just fine. I spent a week at Anders Languages and had an absolutely marvelous time. I found the accommodations to be comfortable and relaxing, the instructors competent and pleasant, the food outstanding (as good as my wife's best cooking and she's a great Mexican cook) and the residence owners to be very attentive in making sure I was having a great experience. Although there are no tests at Anders Languages, I felt I passed my "final exam" with flying colors. After my week of study, I went by bus to rendezvous with my wife, a Mexican native, and spend the following weekend with her parents and relatives in Chichila, Mexico. My wife had become ill and wasn't able to meet me at the bus depot to pick me up. Instead, she sent her mother and cousin, neither of whom speak English. I discussed the situation in Spanish with my wife's cousin and then she debriefed my mother in law who was waiting on a taxi. I then asked my mother in-law how far of a trip it was to her house. My mother in-law, who I'd known for 10 years, was completely shocked and looked at my wife's cousin with a look of disbelief on her face. My wife's cousin looked back at her and responded, "Answer him, he understands Spanish now!". I knew I'd learnt some Spanish, but was struggling with some of the conjugations and more complicated vocabulary and was feeling a little bit frustrated. This complement really lifted my sprits and showed to me how much I had improved in a short amount of time. On the half hour trip up the mountain, I spoke more with my mother in-law than I had in all of our previous meetings combined. While visiting my in-laws has always been enjoyable, being able to speak and understand some Spanish made a great experience even better. While I'm certainly not fluent after one week of Spanish, I had learned enough Spanish to participate and feel part of the group rather than as an outsider looking in.
