A unique way to learn the Spanish language and experience Mexican culture
Based on pre-Hispanic customs and recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, or the Day of the Dead, is probably one of Mexico's most authentic traditions.
For 3 days, Mexicans honor their deceased ones in a unique way: going to cemeteries, putting up private altars in their houses and cooking their favorite food.
Celebrations often take on a humorous tone as the concept is celebrating and connecting with the souls of the deceased.
Throughout the celebrations, families open the doors of their houses to visitors in exchange for small candles to show respect for the deceased. In return, visitors receive food and drink, mostly Tamales, Pan de Muerto and Atole, typical local gastronomy.
The día de los Muertos visits
We will visit the Miquixli festival, put up a Día-de-los-Muertos altar to honor our former cook (who passed away in 2016), and show you how to prepare traditional Tlaxcales.
During a visit to a Tianguis (traditional open-air market), we will show you how Mexicans purchase food and goods for this important event. And on November 1st in the towns of Ocotepec and Ahuatepec, you'll experience as a local how families honor their recently deceased relatives
