Sevilla: Practical Information & Safety Tips

If you’re planning a Spanish immersion in Sevilla, you may have practical questions that travel brochures do not always answer clearly: How do I arrive from the airport? How should I prepare for the summer heat? Are cards widely accepted?

This guide covers the practical details that can make your stay easier, together with sensible safety advice for Sevilla and the surrounding area.

Is Sevilla safe?

In Sevilla, pay particular attention to belongings in the busy historic center, around major monuments and on crowded buses or trams. For nationwide travel advice and general precautions, see our Spain practical information guide.

Sevilla is a popular international destination. Our local team provides practical guidance throughout your stay, and our driver can arrange private transportation from Sevilla Airport, the train station or another location in Sevilla and the surrounding area.

Practical safety tips

Plan evening transportation. Ask our staff for current local guidance and use an official taxi, transportation arranged by our team or a recognized ride-hailing service.

Use trusted transportation. Use official taxi ranks or arrange transportation through our staff, your accommodation or another established provider.

Protect valuables in crowded places. In busy areas such as the historic center, public transport, markets and major attractions, keep your phone and wallet secure and remain aware of your surroundings.

Ask when you are unsure. Our local team can recommend suitable routes, transportation options and places to visit in Sevilla and the surrounding area.

Take summer heat seriously. Sevilla can be extremely hot in summer. Carry water, use sun protection and avoid unnecessary exertion during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Emergency number: Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire services in Spain. Save our local contact information before your arrival.

Money: euros, cards and daily costs

In Sevilla, spending can differ noticeably between neighborhood tapas bars, restaurants near the Cathedral and more formal dining venues. Compare posted menus and prices, especially in heavily visited streets and squares.

Cards

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, supermarkets, hotels and shops. Some very small purchases or traditional businesses may still be easier to pay for in cash.

Cash

Carry a modest amount of cash for small purchases, markets and places that do not accept cards. Smaller euro notes are generally easier to use.

ATMs

Bank ATMs are easy to find around central Sevilla and commercial areas. Review the fee shown on screen before accepting a withdrawal.

Tipping

At Sevilla’s tapas bars, leaving a little change or rounding up after good service is common but not obligatory. Service expectations may differ at more formal restaurants.

Budget guide

Sevilla can be less expensive than Madrid or Barcelona, but costs depend on location and season. Check current menus, transport information and posted prices rather than relying on fixed estimates.

Weather: when to come

Sevilla has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters, warm spring and autumn weather, and very hot summers. Conditions vary, so check the forecast shortly before departure.

October–March: cooler months

Winter days in Sevilla are often comfortable for walking, but mornings and evenings can be chilly and rain is possible. Pack layers for outdoor visits and evening outings.

April–May and September–October

Spring and early autumn are often warm and pleasant. Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril can bring large crowds, higher demand and changes to transportation.

June–August: summer heat

Summer temperatures can be extremely high. Pack lightweight clothing, comfortable footwear, sun protection and a reusable water bottle, and plan outdoor activities for cooler hours.

Check Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) shortly before travel and before longer excursions.

Culture and courtesy

Greetings matter

In Sevilla’s small shops, markets and neighborhood cafés, a friendly “buenos días” or “buenas tardes” is a natural way to begin a conversation with local residents.

Practicing your Spanish

Sevilla receives many international visitors, but a polite attempt to communicate in Spanish is usually appreciated and creates valuable opportunities to practise.

Punctuality

Be on time for classes, transfers, reservations and organized activities. Social meals may begin later than visitors from some countries expect.

Local expressions

Andalusian pronunciation and local expressions may initially sound different from textbook Spanish. Your instructors can help you recognize regional speech while teaching forms understood throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
