Spanish immersions
Cuernavaca, MEXICO
Cuernavaca in a nutshell
Cuernavaca is only one-hour away from Mexico City. It will often take less than half a day to get here from any major US or Canadian city..
And with a spring-like weather all year round, Cuernavaca is a nice place to be immersed in the Spanish language during autumn and winter.
Cuernavaca and the surrounding area have about 850,000 people (based on the 2020 census). The city's primary economic activity is domestic tourism. Cuernavaca is renowned for its extensive array of hotels, restaurants, and spas. The Nissan and Bridgestone factories are the two major employers in the area.
The city was founded in 1529 by the colonial Spanish rulers, but Tlahuicas had been living there for hundreds of years before that. The city's name comes from the Náhuatl word Kwawnawak, which means "near the woods".
The area has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Xochicalco and the monasteries on the slopes of the Popocatepetl volcano. Other important landmarks include the cathedral (built in 1574), the Palacio de Cortés (built in the 16th century), and several haciendas, which are colonial estates.
The sun shines an average of 2,500 hours per year, and Cuernavaca is known for its year-round spring weather. During winter, temperatures rarely go below 20-25°C (68-77°F), and in the spring, temperatures can reach 25-30°C (77-86°F). From June to October it rains, but in the mornings it's sunny and the temperatures are pleasant.
